Tom Brady's new card shop hit by $9,700 daytime heist in SoHo, New York

NEW YORK, NYCardVault by Tom Brady, the high-profile trading card store in SoHo co-owned by NFL legend Tom Brady, was the scene of a significant theft last month when an individual successfully walked away with over $9,700 worth of merchandise using a deceptive payment method.

In the UK, we've recently seen an uptake of thefts not only at shows, but a recent attempted break in last week at Jakes Breaks, the bricks and mortar shop in Nottingham. This is something most vendors and hobby shops are extremely wary of, but what if the person not only came in and walked around the shop, and attempting to pay using the card machine, and then just calmly walked out before anyone noticed...

Details of the Incident

The theft, totalling $9,710 in cards, was not a traditional break-in, the police say that the person came into the shop, picked up a number of baseball and Pokémon cards and attempted to pay for the items. Then it gets interesting, as the payment failed, the man managed to trick the member of staff into thinking the sale went through, then he wandered out of the shop with the nearly $10,000 bundle.

The Soho Store has been open less than a month, with the man himself, Tom Brady, visiting for the opening.

Ongoing Investigation

The nature of the crime—a sophisticated, non-violent bypass of a security system during business hours—has highlighted the lengths to which criminals are going to target the booming collectibles market.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is actively investigating the matter. The suspect is described as a man of medium complexion, last seen wearing a black baseball cap, a dark hoodie, shorts, and carrying a multicolored bag. The NYPD has circulated a description and is appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest and the recovery of the stolen merchandise.
