Are PSA just teasing the UK Market at this point?

A couple of weeks back, London Card Show was humming with rumours of PSA’s imminent landing in the UK after the advertisements for PSA authenticators we’re shown around the show. Though once the dust has settled, it looks like rather than the grading centre the UK was hoping for, it’s a job at eBay's authentication centre as they look to roll their eBay authenticity guarantee into the card category. Not all hope is lost, but we’ll get back to that a little later.

As the trading card hobby increases in popularity in the United Kingdom at a rapid pace, selling sites such as eBay have seen a huge increase in sports, non-sports, and trading card game (TCG) cards being sold via their platform. In 2024, there were reportedly over 2.3 million sales on the site — an extraordinary level of growth over the past several years.

The trajectory of trading cards being sold on eBay has led to multiple job openings for PSA Trading Card Authenticators. As bigger sales take place, eBay is looking to expand its team by hiring candidates to authenticate and evaluate the condition of trading cards (sports, non-sports, and trading card game cards alike).

It’s a great opportunity for fans of the hobby who have the experience eBay is searching for to take their first steps into a fascinating career in trading card authentication. If you have 1–3 years of experience as a professional, dealer, or collector, first-hand knowledge of trading cards, and expertise in identifying counterfeits and card doctoring methods within the industry, then a new career in trading card authentication could be for you. 

Now back to the rumour mill, the underlying tones all seem to be pointing at been able to submit directly to PSA from within the UK within the next 2 years, and eyes will be thoroughly on the opening at Frankfurt next year to see how that goes. 

And finally, if PSA did open a UK Office, would you use them directly with their membership, or would you stay loyal with your middleman service? How bigger shift would it cause in the UK hobby, with cards been graded quicker, especially close to release, would it finally start closing the gap on the US market?
